Note about last two posts

Thank you to the person who posted on the Illini West game being canceled.

Two game recaps were missing. They were originally posted on this site but somehow got removed. I'm looking into it at this time. I try to post results as soon as possible, though I'm not always at a computer or have access until the following day.

Again, thanks for your patience.

Rock Island 57, QHS 34

Another slow start and turnovers once again hampered Quincy in a Dec. 6 home loss to Western Big Six foe Rock Island. Sophomore Ashleigh Spiegelhoff had a career-high 10 points to lead Quincy.

East Moline 54, QHS 22

In game played Thursday, Dec. 13, East Moline jumped to a 14-2 lead and was never threatened in a Western Big Six game against the visiting Blue Devils. Junior Haylee Ott had seven points to lead Quincy, which dressed only seven players due to illness and injury.

Chatham game canceled

This mornings snowfall has canceled today's game at Chatham Glenwood. No makeup date has been announced.

8th Graders Win State Title

The Quincy Junior High School eighth-grade girls won a state title Thursday night with a 39-38 win over Country Club Hills Southwood in the Class 4A title game in Clinton.

It's the second straight state title for these girls, who won it as seventh-graders last year.

Tori Kuhn had 12 points to lead the Comets, who trailed 29-21 entering the final quarter, but got three fourth-quarter baskets by Anna Leenerts and a putback basket by Breanna Scholfield off a missed free throw with eight seconds left.

Get used to seeing those names ... they'll be freshmen next year and will likely be valuable members of the QHS basketball program.

Congrats to the Comets and Coach Mac Meyer!

Rock Island Alleman 56, QHS 34

GAME RECAP: Turnovers once again plagued the shorthanded Blue Devils Thursday night in Rock Island. Emily Hart had 12 points and Ashley Spiegelhoff added eight for Quincy (1-7 overall, 0-2 in the WB6).

HURTING: Shelby Wires had knee surgery earlier this week and the sophomore point guard will likely be out four to six weeks. Junior Hayley Ott is fighting a walking pneumonia illness. Junior Emily Hart played Thursday despite being treated for bronchitis this week. Coach Devoe says her team continues to battle despite being shorthanded.

COVERAGE: Special thanks to Chris Duerr of KHQA who came out last Saturday for our tournament game against Springfield Southeast. Chris doggedly stuck it out to get highlights of our girls and we appreciate his determination. Last night's game was covered by the Moline Dispatch (http://www.qconline.com/archives/qco/display.php?id=364638) and the story will also be in today's Herald-Whig.

NEXT UP: Quincy has a week to get healthy before hosting Rock Island next Thursday. Rock Island is also 0-2 in the conference.

PROGRAMS: The media guide is being printed as we speak! It will be available at next week's game.

EIGHT GRADERS WIN: The Quincy Junior High School girls won a regional in Springfield Thursday, beating previously undefeated Franklin 49-34. Tori Kuhn had 15 points, Breanna Scholfied 13 and Laken Frese 11 for the Comets, who won a state title last year. They play at home next Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Rochester in a sectional game. Go Comets!

Granite City 64, QHS 48; Springfield SE 40, QHS 15

Turnovers continued to plague the Blue Devils as Quincy dropped two games today at the QHS Tournament.

Against Granite City this afternoon at Quincy Junior High School, QHS had 30 turnovers and trailed by 20 points most of the third quarter until making a fourth-quarter run.

Hayley Ott had 19 points, Emily Hart 13 points and seven rebounds and Ashley Spiegelhoff 12 points for QHS (1-6).

In this morning's game, Quincy had 36 turnovers. No player had more than four points.

Thanks to all the parents who worked at the tournament to make it a success.

QHS is back in action Thursday night for a Western Big Six Game at Island Alleman.

John Hope 88, QHS 17

John Hope, the best Chicago-area team in the state, showed why.

Emily Hart had seven points and seven rebounds to lead QHS.

The Blue Devils play at 9 a.m. Saturday at Quincy Junior High School.

Rantoul 50, QHS 43

The Blue Devils could not hold on to a 34-30 fourth quarter lead in the first game of the QHS Girls Basketball Tournament.

Emily Hart had nine points and nine rebounds to lead Quincy, with Shelby Wires adding eight points. Quincy was down three and had several chances to either tie it or cut the lead to one, but Rantoul made six free throws in the final minute to ice it.

QHS plays Chicago John Hope today at 5 p.m. at QHS Gym.

GAME BALL: Hayley Womack, a freshman guard, saw her first extensive action of the season and hit a big 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to keep us close.

NICE GYM: QHS Gym has a refurbished floor and much nicer bleachers.

ALL DAY: Games continue tomorow. QHS plays its third game at either 9 a.m. or 3 p.m.

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Moline 60, QHS 29

Our girls took it on the chin in a Western Big Six and home opening game at Blue Devil Gym.

Moline raced to a 10-0 lead and was never really threatened, steadily pulling away from a 30-15 halftime lead.

Macy Ferguson-Smith and Shelby Wires each had six points for the Blue Devils (1-2). Emily Hart added eight rebounds. Moline was led by Allyssa Decker's 11 points.

GAME BALL: Macy Ferguson-Smith, who scored all of Quincy's six points in the fourth quarter and mixed it up with a much bigger and physical Maroons front line. Also kudos to Katie Kuhn for not backing down and playing some good defense.

JV SCORE: Moline 66, QHS 15. Hayley Womack had six points for the Blue Devils.

COVERAGE: Matt Schuckman will have a story about the game in tomorrow morning's Herald-Whig. We also appreciate the coverage in the Whig's special high school hoops section. WGEM also did a nice job in its preview special last weekend.

TOURNAMENT: Starts Friday, QHS plays Rantoul at 9 a.m.

PROGRAM: The QHS Girls Basketball Program is almost done, but some late ads pushed back production time and it may not be ready this weekend. Rosters for each team and the tournament schedule will be available.

St. Charles North 52, QHS 38

The Blue Devils fell in a game in the Chicago suburbs despite 14 points from sophomore guard Shelby Wires and nine points from sophomore Lindsey Barton.

"This was a really good game to get us ready for Western Big Six play," Coach Sandy DeVoe said.

St. Charles North won the JV game 40-15.

QHS gets ready for its home opener Tuesday against WB6 foe Moline.

QHS 55, Jacksonville 49

Quincy opened the season Tuesday night with a victory on the road, holding off a furious fourth-quarter comeback by the Crimson.

Quincy sprinted to a 14-4 lead by solving Jacksonville's halfcourt ball press early, and the Blue Devils led 31-20 at halftime. Jacksonville cut the lead to three points in the fourth quarter and actually had a 3-pointer to tie the game with three minutes left, but it clanked off the rim and Macy Ferguson-Smith cleared the rebound, and the QHS lead was never threatened again.

Junior Hayley Ott led QHS with 19 points and did a great job steadying the team when Jacksonville's pressure caused turnovers. Junior Emily Hart had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and sophomore Stevee Nolan played in her first varsity game and came up huge with 13 points.

Brittney Winters and Brittney Burgess each had 15 points for Jacksonville. QHS forced four turnovers in the final minute and made six straight free throws to ice the win.

Quincy travels to the Chicago area Thursday for a game against St. Charles North, then gets ready for the home opener a week from tonight against Western Big Six foe Moline.

JV Game: Jacksonville 48, QHS 27. Audrey Holtschlag led Quincy with 13 points.

MVP: Stevee Nolan, who made her varsity debut a memorable one with 13 points and tenacious defense.

Game Balls: Sophomores Kala Griffin and Ashley Spiegelhoff, who will have to shoulder the load with star sophomore guard Shelby Wires sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury. Griffin had a steal and forced a turnover in the final minutes, and nearly knocked down the building by running into the wall in the fourth quarter. Mom, dad and grandpa agreed it's a good thing she only weighs 20 pounds.

Macy Rocks: Macy Ferguson-Smith also had two key steals in the final minute and played tremendous defense down the stretch.

Game Coverage: Check out the Jacksonville Journal Courier's game coverage at http://www.myjournalcourier.com/, it should be posted by tomorrow morning. Also, WGEM TV has its prep preview show Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. Several Blue Devils were interviewed at practice Wednesday for the show.

Get Better: Assistant varsity coach Michaela Fray missed the opener while recuperating from having her appendix removed. We wish her the best and hope she's back on the bench ASAP.
