QHS 66, Illini West 56

Junior guard Shelby Wires nearly had a triple-double in leading Quincy to a 66-56 home victory over a shorthanded Illini West Saturday.

Quincy scored the first 13 points of the game and led 35-19 at the half. The Chargers (7-8) drained five of their nine 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and got within 10 points several times, but Wires made three of four free-throw attempts in the last few minutes to help QHS stay comfortably ahead.

The Charges were led by Danielle Gronewald’s 15 points. Mackenzie Carroll added 14 for the Chargers.

Illini West was also missing several players due to suspension and dressed just eight players.
Senior Emily Hart had 12 points and eight rebounds for Quincy, with junior Stevee Nolan adding 10 points. Coach DeVoe also gave credit to Nolan heading Quincy’s three-quarter press.

The Quincy junior varsity improved to 3-4 with a 41-38 victory.
